No win situation

My job as a CSR was 25-32 hrs a week after I lost a better paying full time job. It is a hostile work environment and has been since I started 8 mos ago, but paid just enough to pay my rent. Two mos ago with an Assistant Mgr becoming Mgr my hours were cut in half. No warning, nothing. I m verbally abused by Mgr and District Mgr. Called HR and they said it was my problem. I do what I'm told then get written up for doing what I was told! I have now been evicted and have 2 weeks to get 40 yrs of my life into a few boxes, and yes I gave notice of resignation which she was all to happy to take. My question is why? I have a long work record all favorable. Is it because I'm 60 and a widow or because I speak up or am I the wrong color(white in this case) or??? I don't understand how they, a Fortune 500 company can get away with this.

Sheila, everything I am going to say is true, but like me 6 months ago I thought it was crap, when a wise person told me, to give it to God! pray on it hard, not some empty prayer any one can fold their hands and talk, you Must have faith. I was a homeless alcoholic, with no faith. I had nothing to lose, I planed on putting this miracle thing to rest and prove that stuff does not really happen. but I did promise her I would have faith like I was asking my mom for a drink of water. and I was and am thankfully wrong, right now I am at a job making too much money, having too much fun at it, and look forward to getting up in the morning, to go and see all my friends ( customers ) I have helped in this short time. I even share a 3 bedroom condo with a friend, Clean and sober!!! PLEASE! PLEASE! TRY THIS, have FAITH! this coming from the newest believer ever! good luck? no good faith!

The question is Why let them get away with this? It is easy enough to prove the reduction in hours as soon as this individual was promoted. HR response is confusing as they need to show proof of a internal investigation of allegations in regards to possible discrimination. You are in two protective EEO classes 1) Female and 2) A person over the age of 40. Stay away from the race card, it isn't becoming of anyone and does show you in a good light. You need to be very detailed in how, what, when, and where, a hostile work environment accrued. Are you the only employee involved? Was this just between you and the manager or did other's join in? Did they do it on their own or were they encouraged by the manager? What were your reasons for speaking up? Was the manager violating rules of the company? If so you maybe protected under the Whistle Blowers Act depending on the subject matter and how you "spoke up". Eleanor Roosevelt was fond of saying " You can only be intimated by those whom you let intimate you" My grandma was found of saying " No matter the situation you will handle yourself with your head up, show dignity and strength, being a lady is the toughest job in town doing it with class makes it the best." I understand because I have had a hard time as well. Why is it that everything is so cut-throat. What happened to working in a place where everyone wants harmony you valued and they work with you. People are so mean with no respect for any one feelings or life. There's a lot of cruel people out there.

Sheila, I have to call "BS" on this one...No fortune 500 company in the World does this or has an HR Dept. that let's anyone get away with it..You also don't mention why you lost the Full Time position in the first place. I'm thinking there's more going on here than you want to tell...

I don't know what the problem is with you or with the company you're working with - BUT - asking is it because I am the wrong color (white), throws up a red flag.

Hi Sheila they won't get away with it if you speak up to the unemployment commission the same thing happened to me I was wrongfully terminated because my district manager didn't like me when I filed for benefits I just told them the facts and win two hearings they appealed the first and I still won the labor laws are very strict you cannot be fired unless of misconduct I was there for 4 years never missed a day of work and never late not once I was not gonna stand for this now I don't know about resigning but they can't fire you good luck I'm a drummer hope you can hear me play 757-817-9560 good luck

Sheila do not be that down on yourself look to see if there are anymore higher paying jobs in the field you prefer I don't know what your age is but even if you are in your 50's you can still change your career goals. The military most of the time will keep you in the same field it is in the negotiation that you come to an agreement.

If you believe you have been a victim of unfair labor practices, you should speak with an attorney. If you don't have the resources (money), you can either seek an attorney who works on a contingency basis or contact your local government's legal aid. You can also do a little research at your library:

  1. find the names of the corporate VP of HR, General Counsel, CEO and their address
  2. write a letter to each explaining your situation and telling them you are planning to litigate

Is there a labor board in your state that you can file a grievance? I would assume that you were harassed so you would eventually give up and leave. There may be some argument that you can make but without a job and your personal life in turmoil i.am sure it is hard to focus. Maybe with a potential grievance against thme.they will.settle to give your job back and with tthis.on record they will be on their best behaviour.

Hi,'m so sorry that you went this a lot of jobs have people who are not at all professional and they should not be working with these companies. I had a nurse make it so hard for me to start work just cause i stood up for myself and you know what is funny i got hired ywo months ago and I never step foot on the floors . I found out that they can still get a tax right off cause it looks like I work their and they made me change my hair color from blond to black when everyone else has red and blond hair but you know what we need to expose the one's so that they can change their attitude towards others cause it's not right.
