Secretary at Learning To Care Training

Unfair Termination

I have worked as a babysitter for the same family for almost a year. The little girl and mother seemed very nice at first but started changing about 5 months in. She began asking me to run errands that were not part of my job description (waking her swearing and angry son up every morning, unpacking her bags from vacation, and vacuuming the entire house). She also began bossing me around and trying to control. She'd random cancel my hours last minute which left me without income for that period and didn't even have the decency to give me notice when she was ending my hours early. I guess I should have seen it coming and left but I was trying to be the loyal sitter and tried to make her happy. She'd give me mountains of laundry and not even an ironing board to work with. She didn't want to buy her daughter a new toothbrush for her daughter even though the current one was dirty and stunk.

On March 1, she came home early and yelled at me cause the chores were not done. I was expecting to finish them at 6 PM and she came home an hour early.

After listening to yelling and starting to cry myself, I began to record our convo audio on my phone. I was fearful of her and she grabbed my phone when she noticed. (This is perfectly legal in my state to record a convo you are a party to). I was astounded she would touch my property and pulled my phone back out of her hand. She made me go through my phone and I just ended up leaving in tears.

She later fired me over text. I hate that b**** of a boss.

What are your thoughts?

The warning signs were there early ,When she started piling on added chores ,You should of raised concerns and pointed out your not a servant but a baby sitter, But at will employment is just that you can be let go at anytime with no reason given but she probably did you a favor cause the situation was going to get worse

Sarah sign up for care.com they have long contract positions and even you might land a permanent job as a sitter. The reason this happen is because you did not sign a contract when you do you have the upper hand they can not do this you realise you can take them to court? Were you a live in Nanny? If not trust me you could have had it worse most people take advantage to say that because you live there you are also their maid and that you have to clean the whole house and run errands. These jobs are under different categories and are not requiered of you unless you signed a contract to do so.My suggestion live and learn go to websites that provide independent contractor paper work you can print them some offer them free some will charge you a small fee but in the long run it will be worth it.You also have the alterantive to go with companies like care.com where they will provide you with these things and help you find jobs as well.Look its not worth crying over just move on I know its hard to invision any possitive view at the moment but in your time move on and find your self something to do but this time have the upper hand with a contract either that you made or that some third party company provides.God bless you and keep your head up this too shall pass.

If you were that unhappy you should have turned in a resignation and left on a high note stating other reasons . working for someone in their home is hard and puts you at their mercy If I was taping something for your safety on your phone and she saw you I would have gone home or insisted to call family if you are under age. under no circumstances would I have gone through my phone for her and if she tried to insist would have called police. cover your own butt always and if you feel threatened do not hesitate to call authorities. waking he son made you uncomfortable then you have the right to say that makes you to uncomfortable and not do as she requests.

Sorry that this happens to you, what makes it so absurd is that you was hired to babysit her daughter not do other house duties and care for the other child. You were doing jobs beyond what u was suppose to do and your boss should had appreciate the things u did because u didn't have to do it. If someone is going to giving u more work then they need to be more friendlier & pay u double. In the beginning she should had written down what she needed you to do, if she wanted a housekeeper then she should had hired one or called for a Nanny/ Housekeeper. Don't just start throwing other task on someone because i could see if u were working at a company but no. I hope u find another family to work at. This is a lesson for you

my thoughts are you're an angel for staying as long as you did. NO ONE should put up with unfair and degrading treatment. find someone that will treat you with the respect you deserve. any 'chores' not agreed upon in the initial interview should be refused, and if that ends up with your losing a job, so be it.

I would have quit when she wanted me to do chores. She didn't hire you as a maid, she hired you to watch her children that's it. Don't feel bad let her hire someone else to deal with that.
