Temp Receptionist
I've been on the same assignment from October 2016 to today, and it appears they are going to keep me here for an undisclosed amount of time. However, I am ready to find something that fits more with my education. I've been taking temporary assignments to make a paycheck. In between assignments, I've achieved my MBA. Now I'm ready to utilize my education and find not just a job but a position. How do I get referrals to get my foot in the door? Another question is: I relayed this information to the temporary service who placed me here at my current assignment, and they quickly became a bit hostile about it. They said, "we don't steal from our clients. If you want another assignment, you have to put in your two weeks' notice there and then we'll find another assignment for you." I've temped before and that's news to me. Usually it's "we can pull you from that one when we get a position that better fits you." They're usually supportive. Any advice? I also need advice for my resume. The school I attended has a student advisor that's been working with me on my resume, but I'm not so sure it's a good change. It went from one page to two. Isn't that a bit long? She seems to be happy with it.
Wow Kim, you've got a lot going on! First of all, GIANT congratulations on getting your MBA-- that's no small feat! That's absolutely wonderful! You definitely are overqualified for a temp receptionist position and I'd agree that your staffing agency does not seem supportive at all. I'd almost suggest contacting a new staffing agency and starting over with them as a jobseeker with an MBA, and not as someone already with an established history. I also saw on your profile that you're a part of Toastmasters, that is awesome! Do you have any connections in the group? Perhaps some folks you can network with to get your foot in the door on some applications? It never hurts to ask. Finally, about your resume. I can't find anything definitive, but it looks like 2-page resumes aren't necessarily a bad thing. What concerns me, though, is that your resume has been expanded from one page to two pages. Does that mean it just stretched the information out when it could've been more concise? I recommend taking a look at these sample resumes from a Harvard site, and you can see there are both one and two-page resumes here, and they both look good: http://ocs.fas.harvard.edu/files/ocs/files/hes-resume-cover-letter-guide.pdf
I hope some of this is helpful!
