INTERVIEWS: (No. #5. Mistakes To Avoid) CELL PHONES.

DON'T FORGET...TURN-OFF YOUR CELL PHONES!

So, you’ve been out work for about 3-5 years due to circumstances beyond your control. Your knowledge, skills and abilities are of high caliber and the board members recognized and discussed this matter being prepared to move forward despite your “gaps in service.” They understand that 102 million people are out of jobs and no need to make the economy worse.

In the breath and height of the interview, while waiting for your response to situational question which requires your critical thinking skills, that could impact a $15M Contract with their client, your Cell Phone rings loudly!!!

Suddenly you have five faces to consider in a split/second. Starting from the far-left, the gentleman appears overly serious; the lady with a quenched smile is possibly thinking, “you’re kidding me”, or the lady with her hand over her mouth is probably thinking “my gosh you’re in trouble” or the lady who’s head is tilted may be thinking “are you serious” or the gentleman to the end-right is thinking “this doesn't look good."

I can never overly stress the importance of not bringing your CELL PHONE to your interviews. Because forgetting to turn it off, can be equivalent to the board turning off their decisions to hire you.

Folks, aim to pass your interviews with flying colors and not ringing bells!

I Believe You Can…!

It sounds like you did the right thing. You made comment on her interview sheet based on her attitude. It would have rubbed me the wrong way all day but after some good music and sleep it off it would be another day.

First of all anyone who comes to an interview with a cell phone or any other device is ignorant to the letter because we you go on any job interviews your total and complete focus should be on interview and what the hiring manager is going to ask you. Cell phones and other devices are nothing but distractions and most people do not want to hear them going off whether they are on silent mode and you can still hear them buzzing if they happen to go off.

A few years ago I had female candidate come into my office for a job interview and my interviews usually take between 1 and 2 hours and depending on the experience on the person on the other side of my desk and if they are an imbecile I will professionally end the interview quickly and for the seasoned professionals they will be there for at least 2 hours and this female candidate that I had in the beginning of the interview was professional, polite, well educated and had a stellar resume. As I started to get into the more complex areas of the interview her cell phone kept going off with a very loud and obnoxious ringer that was revolting to anyone who had heard it because it was laced with very profane and vulgar language and I can not repeat here exactly what it was saying so please use your imagination.

Every time it went off she stopped talking to me and reached down in her pocketbook and took it out and started typing on it to respond to a text message. This went on for about 3 to 4 times and now my patience was running thin and I had asked her, "Miss, is everything aright or is there some type of emergency?". She had the nerve, gall and audacity to say to me, "You be quiet and hold on and I will get on with you when I finish and why don't you go get a cup of coffee or something...!". I was shocked that is woman had said this to me and I was not going to tolerate it for one moment and I said to her, "Miss, I can tell you right now you are not a good fit for this position no matter how much experience that you have and the interview is now over".

Again she had the nerve, gall and audacity to say to me, "The interview will be over when I say it's over because I had to answer my customers and clients that I have late at night for personal in home massage services...!". I stood up from behind my desk and said, "Miss the interview is over and leave and if you don't I will call security and have you removed from the property...!". She got up and stormed out of my office and it was apparent the text messages on her phone were more important than the job interview she was on.

She had the opportunity to obtain a high paying salaried position but because of her cell phone and text messages she did not get it.

I was so upset by this if I could have I would have slapped her so hard in the mouth that her Mother would have felt it a few towns over.
