made the manager MAD

My friend works at a store, so I thought I would have a better chance getting a job there. I applied online and then went in when she was working so I could be introduced. The manager seemed stressed and said “Don’t think I’m going to hire you just because Staci works here” and then walked away clearly frustrated. Not sure if they were having a bad way or what. Is there a way to fix this? I don’t know what I did wrong.

You cannot go in and expect a job because of a friend. Sometimes many companies hire on work experience and not who you know. He or she cannot play favorites. Looks bad with the other employees. I'm sure friends of other employees have tried also and that's probably why the manager seemed upset.

Ask for a meeting with the manager. Sell yourself on your own experience and qualifications. Explain that Staci is a friend but you don't want special favors. Ask for an honest evaluation of how your skills fit what they are looking for. If it doesn't work don't be discouraged.

Well Sherlock! I do believe you have solved the crime, the case of the misrepresented orphan. I hope Staci said it was okay for you to come and introduce yourself and if not then you've created double jeopardy. Her job, and your chances of getting that job. Your best option was to have Staci mention to her manager that you had applied for that position online and would like to know if he/she had seen your application and then left well enough the heck alone.

No. You did nothing wrong so you have nothing to fix. If the manager even lets you apply for the job, do so. If he wants you to leave your friend out of it so should he.

Maybe Staci is a better friend than she is an employee. Was the company actually hiring? Do you have the right qualifications for the job, if they were hiring? How does Staci get along with her boss?

Manager just setting the tone so you know that they aren't hiring you for work friendship relationship. If they do hire you, you need to be more serious since you two are friends before you started there.

Oh wow, I'm so sorry that happened to you. From what you described, that manager probably shouldn't be in management. I don't care how bad a day you're having, that doesn't give you the right to screw someone else's day up. Plus, you're not supposed to bring your personal feelings and emotions into the workplace, especially if you're a manager. If that happened to me I would probably say "Fine, *uck you, not only do I not want to work here but I'm not going to shop here anymore either" (assuming it's somewhere you've shopped before). Of course this is just me, something like that really pisses me off and that attitude is completely unprofessional, but if this job is one you have your heart set on or really need I would follow Marcus's advice. Although I will note that if that's the way the manager handles stress, you might not want to work for him/her. Good luck!

Sounds like someones having a bad day. I say don't let that discourage you from going for the job. Ask your friend to plug in your name again on a better day when the managers in a better mood but be careful. Managers are supposed to be able to work emotionally intelligent and not allow their frustrations to show; especially when introduced to a potential employee. Of course no one's perfect but proceed with caution and avoid getting hired under BAD management.
