Join me at "Job Search for the Time-Crunched" Group here on Jobcase!

I just created a new group on Jobcase, will you join me? It's called "Job Search for the Time-Crunched." I'm thinking we can share tips and tricks for finding work faster. We are all busy, so how can you find a new job when there aren't enough hours in the day? Let's figure it out together!

Dear Rhonda Campbell,

Making the transition from Fine Arts teacher to Admin means you need to show transferable skills. It's not whether they believe you can do it. It's whether they feel you could hit the ground running. So, you have to quantify your past experience and show them how it will help you be immediately successful in your new field.

Also, I have worked with literally 1000s of job seekers directly over the last 15 years and can tell you when you make a career change, the only way to successfully jump is through networking. You have to talk to humans who see your personality and aptitude as more valuable than exact experience. The job boards you are going and applying to now are disqualfiying you because you don't have recent experience in the area you want to get into. The automated systems are taught to deselect you (toss your application) if you aren't an experience match. So, you MUST go around the process. It can be done. I see it all the time, but it means approaching the job search in a different way. I strongly encourage you to pull back some of the hours you are spending now filling out applications and refocus on learning some new networking strategies. That will pay off!

Good luck and I hope you keep coming back to the group to share. We will be offering a lot more tools and insights daily.

JT

I search for jobs just like I'm employed, some weeks I put in 35-40 hours. Transitioning from teaching fine arts to administrative assistant/human resources. Am I not believable? (Rhetorical question to myself)

Those are all important tips. I have found that #1 is key. Make a list of employers and stay focused on those employers only. After a period of time has gone by without a job offer, make a new list of more employers and focus again on only those in your new list.

STUDY SHOWS MOST SUCCESSFUL JOB SEEKERS ONLY LOOK 1-3 HOURS/DAY!

Hi everyone!

A new study by the Career Advisory Board just looked at the most successful job seeker and what they did to get hired. The average job search in America is 9+ months (too long!). These people got jobs in under 6 months. How did they do it? Turns out, the only spent 1-3 hour/day looking for a job. Here's what they did:

  1. Created a target list of employers they wanted to work for.
  2. Networked and found people who could introduce them to someone that works at the company so they could get insider info.
  3. Customized the resume and cover letter to represent what they learned about the company.
  4. Tried to find the hiring manager and sent them their application directly, skipping over the online job application process.

In short, they worked smarter, not harder.

What do you think? Are you using any of the techniques above?

I'd love to hear people's thoughts!

Sincerely,

J.T. | CEO, CareerHMO.com
