Disclosing disability

I disclose my disability of being bipolar and chronic pain when asked on the applications if I have a disability I say yes. During a phone interview I don't disclose anything but do people suggest that I disclose that I have a disability during the phone interview hoping that would give me an edge over other applicants because of the benefits they can get from the government. I've been fully employed during my disability so I have a great work history. What do people think should I disclose my disability during a phone interview hoping to get a benefit?

Never disclose anything until the paperwork is signed.

Noel -- I would NOT disclose your disability. First of all, are you under the care of a doctor and/or therapist? Are your conditions being successfully managed? That needs to come first. Then I would recommend that you seek low-stress work, perhaps a work-from-home opportunity. Disclosing your condition immediately is likely a detriment to you -- Prospective employers will be concerned that you may be unable to handle stress as well as labor, and see a risk of higher absenteeism and insurance costs. No doubt you'll find the right opportunity. I wish you the best.

If the disability affects your ability to do the job, then you have to disclose this information. Also, if you opt not to disclose and then are having trouble on the you cant turn around then and say I have always had this disability.

I don't know about the benefit, but I do think you should disclose that information in person.
