Success with Direct Contact?
Would it be beneficial to personally hand in my resume to nearby companies rather than submit it online? The online application process is broken in my opinion. I’ve tried applying for all types of administrative support job levels, qualified and overqualified, with absolutely no success. I know the walk-in approach is loaded with ‘gatekeepers’ that prevent anyone looking for a job to have direct access to human resource rep or hiring manager but I think there's a greater chance my info will get to the appropriate manager if I leave my application at the reception area. Anyone have better results personally handing in their applications?

That would be fine .I really appreciate that it would help alot..

I was told by a friend at one company that they hired people that submitted resumes via postal mail with cover letters that were directed to the the hiring manager..they called the company and asked for the name of the hiring manager if they couldn't find it online.

It depends due to the fact that a huge majority rely on computers to socialize with their potential employees. I always introduce myself in person and allow them to tell me about their company which most of the time gives them and opportunity to do the same. So when your name pops up you will have a better chance. I always speak with managers, so the other employees don't feel intimidated that ill take their place! And I allow the manager to tell me what is a convenient time to talk maybe 5min.! Remember they want to feel like they are in charge....Be a great listener and always do research before you get involved with them! Building your own business is the goal.... I pray that you get all the experience you need to build your future.

I agree. I used to have no problem getting a job when businesses used to take resumes or applications in person, but it's changed since then-everything is online now and I hardly ever come across a business that takes résumés at their locations. They tell you to go online and fill out an application or submit your résumé online. Now, I'm having so much trouble finding a job-even the ones that I'm overqualified for. I make a much better impression in person. Plus, I think that alot of these companies hire people that they know. I just moved here recently, so they don't have any local businesses' to call and get info about me.

Hi Monica! my name's Mike i feel the same as you.i put in alot of applications almost never get a response.my sister's bulleying me around ,putting a guilt trip on me.saying my brother's doing it all like i'm to blame for the recession!i can't hardly find anything online, nothing new,she says i should call back, check up on these employers pester them into hiring me.well i say that's rude, you can't force an employer to hire you! it has to be his or her choice.she tried to hook me up with cvs they only hire kids 16 to 25 yr.olds.i'm 59yrs.old i consider myself too old.there are some jobs out there that have age requirements.she doesn't believe me .i told my brother to tell her to call the boss there and ask "would you hire a 59yr. old man?unfortunely i don't have an answer for you!good luck!

Hi Monica: It really depends on the company you're applying to. Pay close attention to the instructions or policy posted regarding submission of on-line applications. Some companies adamantly forbid pre-interview contact by applicants and may use a violation of this protocol as an elimination tool during the selection process. If the company doesn't have any instructions forbidding pre-interview contact, I would make a follow-up call about 2 weeks after submission to check status. (one call, don't pepper the HR manager or hiring manager with multiple calls.) The only other suggestions I can make are: (1) stay positive, (2) look at your search criteria and mileage range (you may need to expand your mileage range and get creative with your descriptors for your job searches, and (3) look over your search range objectively and see what business genres you haven't applied to yet (e.g.: colleges/universities, government, legal, courts, etc.) Hope this helps!

If you want to have a resume submitted manually I suggest you find someone in the organization to carry the mail. Using an insider provides validates you as a good person worth am interview even if you don't get the job you should get the initial interview. Don't be afraid to ask friends our LinkedIn contacts to help with connections, most people are ready to help if asked.

It really does depend on the company and even how busy they are that day. Of HR has a full schedule you may not be able to talk to anyone even if they normally would talk to you. See if you can find someone you know that works at the company that will walk your resume over,to HR. If you are not,on LinkedIn join and start building contacts and use it to see who you might know or even someone that could refer you to someone at the company.

I think it depends where you apply. I tried following up in person and everyone just kept referring me back to the online application. Give it a try though cause you might get lucky.
I'm trying to go to dollar general .I was assistant manager in Heidelberg at dollar general.
