Be Creative

After searching for 7 month through all of the job search websites, I decided to print out a bunch of resumes and some generic cover letters. Then I mailed them to businesses in the area. A few weeks later I received an email from someone from a different company who had been given my resume by his brother. It was one of the resumes I mailed the companies that "weren't hiring". I started to work last Monday. You never know who will receive your resume at just the right time.

Hello Jackie, great job(no pun intended). I have an old school mentality when it comes to job hunting and I have been on both sides of the online application process. While it is a great idea, it fails in most cases and I will explain why. Again, I have been on both sides, applying and hiring. When a company post a position online, anyone in the world can apply for it. So, sometimes depending on the position, a company can receive thousands of resumes. A company would have to hire and pay numerous people just to sit and look at resumes all day, for weeks. So, they use a computer program to weed out most of these resumes. The problem with this is, most of the extremely lazy and non creative people have done just enough research to know how to write their resume, to make theirs go to the top of the list. This means, the very creative people out there who really put a lot of time into making their resume special, their resume gets dumped by the computer. I have never received a new job by applying online. I always do what you did, or I just walk in and introduce myself. I have done this for years. Even in the Seattle area, as big as it is, I have made a reputation for myself in my field. Now, I get job offers even when I'm not looking. I actually have owners of other businesses calling me weekly, to see if I'm coming to their business next. I'm pretty honest and upfront with companies and tell them that I will only be staying 3 to 5 years at the most. I lay down what my sign on bonus will be and how much I will make, I require to look at their records first, to see if they can even afford me. I'm not some super rich guy that makes ungodly money, but I do make about double what most make doing the same job. This puts me in 150, to 180k a year range. So there are many places that promise the moon, but at the end of the day, they would have to change their entire profit base just to pay my wages. This would cause them to go under before, I had enough time to make significant changes to the business. I do congratulate you and once again, GREAT JOB!
