"At Will" States

Who is this law supposed to protect? The employer or the employee?

I feel like the only pros to this law are for the employer... Anyone agree/disagree?

What does the law really Do? I one night decided to read the entire us constitution it stated country then the people. Interest over the country comes before the people.

Agree. It is to the benefit of the employer. They keep u for probation period. Then right before it is time to turn u over they get rid of you. Now employer got the job done from you. N he doesn't have to pay benefits or salary, no way to fight it or get any unemployment. I have seen it done more then once

It makes it easier for the employer to get away with various forms of discrimination. In my view, it surely doesn't protect the employees at all. I was only terminated from one job in my entire life and it was within the 90 day probationary period. The employer would not give me the reason for the termination and didn't need to since it was an "at will" state. Without going in too much detail, I will say that the company was telling the technicians to steal something from the customers on a daily basis. I spoke to several supervisors and eventually an executive even called me to discuss the issue. I did not want to create waves, especially as a new hire but I refused to sell out my values for any company. I even game them a rational solution to their problem so no one would have to steal. In any event, I'm with you and feel like companies should have to provide a reason for firing employees so we can expect fairness.

I suppose that the opposite would be that the law doesn't require a reason for an employee to quit or just stop showing up. In the non "at will" states, both employer and employee have to give a reason as to why their relationship isn't working out, right? So then what's the point of this law other than to simply benefit shady employers? Why do states even have the option to endorse this law?

I too agree! Yet, there is nothing WE can do about it besides have TRUE substantial proof regarding discrimination or wrongful termination. All we have is God, liable witnesses, and true working abilities! Thats all, the end.

Calli, I totally agree, benefits employer only . If an employer wanted to fire you in missouri, all they have to give as a reason is two words, JUST CAUSE

Hi Calli! I guess it would depend on your circumstances, but it never hurts to speak to someone if you feel you have been discriminated against. "At-will" is defined as in which an employee can be dismissed by an employer for any reason (that is, without having to establish "just cause" for termination), and without warning, as long as the reason is not illegal. So, in essence, it was established for the employer and their right to terminate you if they feel for example you are not performing your role for which you were hired. I hope that helps!
