Hi Charles Colfer that seems pretty shady and bordering on illegal to me. I don't know the law that well, but I would consult your local labor board and see what you can do. In the meantime, be sure you are blasting them on social media - post to their twitter, Glassdoor, linkedin, here, etc.
They may think it's not a big deal to hire one person over the other, but once they extend the offer and expect you to leave your job it becomes about your livelihood and wellbeing.
I'm sorry this has happened - that SUCKS. Keep your head up. With that happenings, good things are definitely coming. Keep searching and something great will pop up.
