I am unique!
I feel like I have a pretty unique personality, but when it comes to job applications I could not come off more bland. How can I show off my true self in my writing while still being formal? Too much focus on formality is preventing me from being seen as human and getting these jobs.

Hi Lilly. You are indeed unique! EVERY person is as unique as their fingerprint. As a former hiring manager I've always kept this concept when interviewing potential candidates. Unfortunately in today's competitive job market it's very easy to get lost in a "sea" of resume's. When applying, see the company as a customer and sell your brand: yourself. Marketing one's self, showing the potential employer how you would be the best fit is essential these days. Also, use as many social media outlets (Facebook, LinkedIn, Jobcase, etc.) to generate as many contacts as possible and make your presence known. Good luck and best wishes!

I'd love to see your resume to see how you can show your great personality. I also have a unique personality so I know how difficult it can be to show your true self and still sound professional.

As long as you use proper grammar - say what you want to say. If your heart agrees but not your head - don't say it. If your head agrees but not your heart - don't say it. But if your head and your heart both agree say it with Power.

I totally agree Lily I am such a great worker but when it comes to Application writing or resumes they are boring.

I soooooo agree!!! I feel the same way!!!! How do I get my spunky personality across on paper?!?!!

Hi Lilly! I didn't look at you profile. Here is a website that has been helpful to me. Check it out: http://www.askamanager.org - when you log on to the site it will indicate Ask A Manager - Official Site. Good Luck! :-) Donald White

i agree i get so nervous i stutter and ramble on interv iew. im unique so how do you get through interviews ?

Hi Lilly,
You should, by all means let your personality be known - especially now when personality & character mean so little to people, (except to the ones that know the value of these gifts).
My advice to you would be, keep your resume Formal. Let them know what you have done, experience etc. Include a Cover Letter - this give you the opportunity to let your attitude, character & personality be seen. Tell them about you, and what you can offer them & what you can contribute for their gain.
Many think Cover Letters are history, they probably don't have anything to say and saying that cover letters are Old School is justifying not writing one. For the most part, I believe people want to know what their getting before making a commitment.
People want people that attract, or at least are pleasant to work with & a positive reflection on them. The most attractive thing about a person is what comes from within.
Best Wishes
Be your self is all you have to do if people are threatened by individuality it's on them.
