Question
Why do management positions require a bachelors degree if you have experience?

Hello, Susie, The short answer is that with a degree (in theory, at least) you have studies that will enable you to speak and interact with 'the big dogs' above your position on a more equal level than someone who merely worked their way up from the bottom. Now don't get me wrong, I am not dissing on experienced people who worked it up from below. That is awesome, but sometimes those in upper mgt will look down on you if that's all you got. I have seen it done by a moronic poltroon myself, so I know it happens. Besides, have a degree in management also looks and works better on you resume as well. If your personality is versatile, then that, too, is an added plus. Now there are those out there with tons of smarts, but a total tool when it comes to interacting with others, and sadly, sometimes they get the jobs due to family relations, to just plain old kissing up. They are who they are and a better person will eventually take their place - hopefully, that person will be you. I hope this helps.

A degree shows time and effort on your part. Usually (not always) a degreed person is viewed as someone who can think rationally and make sound judgements without needing constant supervision. Statistics show degreed personnel are more capable of leadership. When I was a marine, I was an officer. To be an officer you need a bachelors minimum. It shows aptitude and the fortitude to do what’s needed. Again...there are people with no degree who can do just a good a job. Yet organizations rely on statistics and numbers.
Experience plays a role as well. Yet an education 99% will get your foot thru the door when experience will not.

That seems to be a matter of the business and there are not many educations that actually teach you to the job, but a degree does show that at some time you were able to learn and adapt. With the Ph.D., I was on the other side, with businesses wanting to make me a manager even though I was very good at what I did. In the place where I was forced into management, my style did not seem to agree with the business, which at that time was banking, but way behind the scenes and showed my employees what to do and left them alone to do their jobs, while I went somewhere and sat down and stayed out of their way until they had a problem. All that my employees had to do was to remove files from cabinets, boxs, bags, copy them and put the originals back Not rocket science, but I had to send a couple of women home on pay to change from skits to jeans - a little modesty. The money that I was earning without going into management was more than enough for my needs, and that was all that I wanted. Then there are still the places that want to call you a manager just so that they will not have to pay you overtime. When I resigned

Susie, that's why you're not in management!

I hear you...I have 20+ years experience and misc management training, i forgot more that a degreed person knows and i consider my experience and knowledge priceless but, yet i'm turned down for jobs requiring an associates degree. they put too much weight on associate degree because they come out of school only knowing enough to be dangerous IMO.

It guarantee's the employer that you have the experience and have been exposed and trained in that area of expertise. Verbally stating that you have the experience on your resume; may not be accurate. I am a Manager and several people I have hired stated that they have had five plus years experience in accounting as a full-charge bookkeeper, but some have only been an accounting clerk not a full-charge bookkeeper. When my new hires are in training they are not aware of some of the terminology of what a full-charge bookkeeper does. This is when I notice they were not qualified for the position, although their resume states their experiences. This is why many employers are testing and interviews have become more complicated. They want to make sure they are hiring the right candiate.

A company can choose whatever prerequisites they desire.
