More than just a day off!

Labor Day as we know is a U.S. national holiday held the first Monday in September. For most, it marks the last weekend of summer and the start of the school year, but not many know how it came to be and why.

Back in the late 1800s, the holiday’s founders wanted to do two things: 1- unify union workers and 2- have a reduction in work time. Factory workers at that point were putting in 70 PLUS hard hours at their jobs!!

These long working hours caused many union organizers to focus on winning a shorter eight-hour workday that we typically see today. They also made sure that workers were given more days off, such as the Labor Day holiday, and reduced the workweek.

We don’t know about you, but we can’t imagine working 7 days a week with NO time off!

When would you have moments to spend with your family or catch up on errands or sleep?!

Have you ever worked at a job with very little time off? How did you handle it?

Share your tips with others!

Once I'm home from work, I eat, make lunch and turn in early. I will have prepped a simple pair of khakis (navy or beige), any colour clean tee and pull on shoes, oh and earrings. It's all good. Trouble don't last always \o/

I recently worked for a company for two years and in that time worked an average of 72 to 84 hours a week. Last year I worked over 1300 hours of OT. It is incredibly hard on the family and your body. The money is great because of the OT pay. But it is not worth what you have to sacrifice.

Can you guys believe it? I just my got my master in Computer Science Engineering last April, and I still can’t get a job; everyone turns me down because of experience. How am I going to get experienced if no one gives me a chance? But I have a classmate that graduated the same time as me; he is already working because he knew somebody. Smh!

I believe if a person works more than 8 hours in one day, the work progress will slow down. Also the products will not be satisfactory and the company will loose in the long run.
