Most small businesses are started at age 45. Why? Because at that age, you have been there and done that. It is time to start working for yourself and have some sense of purpose. That is not always possible and let's face it, you need the money. When your age comes up, and you have all of this education and experience behind you, every job you apply for gets turned down. When you do get an interview, or are working on a cover letter, try to explain the reason you want that job. Here is what I've done, and it works in getting more interviews. Explain that at your age, money is less important than a sense of purpose. At this point in your life, you want to give back. Whether that us caring for the elderly, helping your community, caring for children and the disabled, and being a mentor, or simply being healthier and being more active. Whatever you can think of that would give you a sense of purpose and makes sense to your potential employer. After all, it is not a job if you love what you do and feel you are making a difference.

This approach might work in sales or academia or trades, but not in tech.

When I've been in interviews of jobs I didn't get in recent years -- I'm in digital mgmt and 50+ -- despite my stellar resume and current vital tech skills, there was always a moment when the interviewer would look at me with doubt after bringing up a new technology that they specifically used. And I knew that was the moment I lost the job.

Now, I view this moment as an opportunity. To go into great detail about software I've recently trained on my own, usually what they listed in their ads through Lynda or CodeAcademy or Udemy and hammer home the point that my success stems from that neverending thirst for new knowledge, new tech, new methods. I've beome quite adept at getting software demos from companies using my web site domain as my "company" and me as a prospective buyer. And then learning it. Quickly. Not as an expert. But as one who can speak the language. And it's not easy. But it's what I have to do.

I hate agile methodology, which is really a way to weed out slackers and unqualified team members and to create camaraderie among geeks who aren''t necessarily socail or communicative. But dammit, I know it inside and out because it is the way the wind blows now and to be stubborn about not adapting to it is career death.

The key is to be proactive before the interview. Not making promises during the interview.

I've written about this here before but to avoid ageism one must be current, physically more youthful than one's years and that includes weight, wardrobe, hairstyle, vocabulary, smiling instead of frowning, never ever admit to being lost or confused or behind and being a supportive teammate to younger team members. There are some that HIGHLIGHT YOUR AGE AND MAKE IT A POSITIVE and I say, Bullshit. Instead, know what you're doing. Read outside blogs about your tech or your industry. Go to industry events. Develop relationships or have encounters with your industry's "celebrities"...This goes a long way...especially w/ youth...my anedote about working at an event in which Bill Gates was speaking at and did photo approvals with just me afterward has literally secured work for me because of its uniqueness...not wisdom...not old timey parables....but shooting the shit w/ a tech icon...people remember that about me...it makes me special...and that happened in 1999 (!!!) but I've never once mentioned when it was. Only that it happened.

Thank you for your words, I can contest to ageism, until now, I have never heard of that word... but here I am at 60, laid off in June of this year, house note, insurance, bills etc still need to be paid, i have been on a couple of interviews, but the calls that i am getting are under $18.00 with the driving distance , it is not worth me taking it, unbeknownst to me, i put in a application at a friends job, she called me and stated that my resume ran across her in the office, yes she is management ... she told me that due to my age, they will not hire me .... but my qualifications was undeniable .... WoW .... that is incredible

Amen to that. Started my own business at 35 and have not looked back. We need to stop feeding corporations our labor and go on our own to offer our skills. They can contract us if they need us and accept our pay requirements!
