Noticing a new trend in interviewing
Which may be good news for those of us who have an employment gap.
When I lost the position I had for 13 years, of course the burning question was "why did you leave". Then after being unemployed for a year, "what have you been doing with your time off" was added. When I took a job that I was way over qualified for pretty much out of desperation, "why did you change career paths" was asked. Some said they had been in the same situation and took anything just to have a paycheck coming in, too while others were just plain snarky about it. I've had my current position for almost a year now and while it's closer to my area or expertise, I'm still under employed and under paid. Things are not working out with this company so I decided to start looking again. I practiced all the answers to what happened to my 13 year position to why I want to leave my current one. Thing is, no one has asked me that this time around! It totally threw me the first couple of interviews when I wasn't asked that, but mostly they want to know about your experience and how you can be as asset to them - which I think is much better. I'm not saying don't prepare for these types of questions but for me, it has been a welcome change.
That's awesome Rhonda! It's definitely always great to be prepared, but glad that they are focusing more on your experience than your past time off. Thanks for sharing!!
