Senior Graphic Designer

8 months out of work!

After 17 years of service and many ad designs I was let go from a job back in November of 2015. The reason was this: my boss has a three year contract with our parent company... so every three years he lets go of two employees to make himself look good! I'm 55 years old and have been on several job interviews and came up with nothing! The recruiters tell me that their clients are looking for the young kids because they are taught the "new" way. Well... I do circles around the new kids and have plenty of experience with all Adobe Software and many years of printing too. My friend who is a printer tells me all the time that he receives jobs from these young kids and most of them are sent to him wrong and have to be redone for printing. He even received a job that was all in 72 dpi. I tried everything but I ran out of money and time and the freelance world is tuff too. I did some jobs and I have yet to be paid by some of them... even they have no money!

Hi Alan, have you consider starting on your business with the experiences and knowledge you have? You may have a better outcome, and , or revising your resume, sign up to different websites for your resume to be connected, and never give up. It is just the way this economy and business runs, too many contracts, but not keeping all the worthwhile employees. So don't give up, and suggestion: get a contract/or agreement to get paid no matter what, it is the legal way in all types of "how to with all businesses". Sometimes at its rough, it's in the timing...best wishes.

Yup. I am 58 and can't land a job, either. What are we supposed to do? Commit suicide? I am very angry that the government isn't doing anything to help us. It is high time they start holding corporations responsible for age discrimination.

Hi Alan: Thanks for posting to Jobcase! What kind of freelancing work are you doing? I used to freelance, and I used sites like Guru.com and Upwork.com. They were pretty good about making sure you got paid. Let me know your experiences and I'll see if my own might be useful for you!
