Work History Gaps
It looks like I may have a long gap in my resume due to medical reasons. How can I explain that to future employers without getting too deep into details?

I was a stay at home mom until my last child started kindergarten. I had three children and was fortunate to stay home and raise them. My last job i had for almost 8 years. I am looking for a new job to call home.

Hello Shelby JustTell the employer that you had to take a leave of absence due to medical reason. Explain that you are ready to get back on the work field. Also mention that your health have to be taking care of first in order for you to work and now everything is okay now. As long as you be honest absolutely what can you lose.
Wish you the best Darrel

- Foro Energy – Layoff.
- Sioux Steel - Terminated from too many days off due to illness. Moving from the south to the north and having a bad winter had a sore throat to the point where it was painful to talk. Lasted for 3 months. Also had the flu. Normally, I am a healthy person.
- Martinrea - Worked about 30 consecutive days (10 hour days) then 2 days off for 6 months. Needed more time off. Quit
- Huffman Corp. - Manager was abusive with language and vociferous. Quit.
- Eagle Bend - Layoff.
- Tennessee Rand Co. - Contractor. Project ended.
- Stayed with family to see father through cancer treatments.
- Memry Corp - Layoff.
- Alliant Techsystems - Company moved to a different site and I did not want to move to the new site.
- Magnecomp - Had offer from Alliant Techsystems and accepted offer
- Hutchinson Tech. - Had offer from Magnecomp and accepted offer.

Simple. Don't go into detail because it gives the impression that it could happen again. If it does so always provide a letter from your doctors

Where,if at all, do place this information on your resume. Thanks. mabuchanan57@gmail.com

In that gap time , I had made local Small Company and I had to run it. Unfortunately I lost a lot of money from Firms and Other small factory productions. THAT IS WHY I CAME BACK TO SEAFARER.

Actually Eugene Lopez, the second person to reply, is the most correct answer to an explanation for work history gaps. It is always commendable to be honest BUT in this situation straight honesty may get you judged by the hiring party as a weak candidate due to potential unreliability. Human psychology in general comes into play here and the subconscious checks that box off in the mind of a potential employer to avoid possible future problems by avoiding an interviewee who is forthright and open regarding these matters. Bear in mind also that if the employer hires someone with no gap in employment history and no uncertain shadows in their past it does NOT guarantee that they won't end up with an absent/unreliable worker either. In fact an experienced and humble boss knows that the candidate that has lived a bit of diversity and still engages the world with sincerity is usually the best choice for any company.
