The Truth about $alary

How do employers check my self reported salary history? Is that done during the background check, previous employer reference check, or through the IRS with a signed consent form? I haven’t been asked verbally yet but the applications I’m completing have areas to include start and end salary for each of my previous jobs. I can’t remember some of the wages for my older jobs but I can try to find the exact salary amount on old tax returns if companies verify this information for accuracy.

Salary checks are part of the background and reference checks. Companies have you sign a consent form that they sent to previous employers that allows them to provide that personal info.

Double check the application. There should be a yes/no selection box next to the previous salary info you list that ask your permission to verify salary info.

Maria, Often someone at the Personnel Department where you will be working will call your former jobs to verify such; you also do not need to give an exact figure. Offer them a range or an approximate figure. You should not be penalized for not being exact to the Penny regarding such. Good luck!Q

It’s reasonable to use an approximate number as long as it close enough not to give potential employer the impression that you're deliberately inflating the salary to get a better job offer.
