Jack of many trades.

Decatur, GA. I've been here almost 3 months, 8 Job search engines, guiding me to 22 temp agencies, 4 of which i've worked through before, just not here. 38 resume postings, 6 Drug screenings (and i passed them all), only to end up in a temporary assignment. My question is... What happened to the days where you could go directly to the employer and interview with them? Some temp agencies don't know how to screen talent.

As a past recruiter in Human Resources, I can share with you that many companies either don't have the time, energy, or resources to recruit candidates. When a job is advertised, hundreds of resumes flood in and must be reviewed to shake out the qualified from the unqualified. Companies now rely heavily on temp agencies to form high caliber pools of recruits they will interview and ultimately offer the job. Filtering employees through a temp agency also allows the company to test-drive the worker without the expense of benefits. If the worker is found to be a match to the company's culture, the company will pay the temp agency an additional fee for hiring "their" temp. Executive positions are an exception as are higher salaried positions. These candidates are recruited for direct hire and are fewer and further between. Don't give up in your search. Just because you come through a temp agency doesn't mean you will not get hired into a permanent position. There is the danger of the company growing content with the worker being a temp. If a company exceeds six months with a temp, It is then up to the temp to request and require a permanent position or at least the same retirement benefits as a permanent employee. If the company refuses, there is always the less desirable option of seeking another employer.

I've been asking the same question I miss paper applications. You don't even know what your signing up for anymore I hate it. I went to an interview Monday and didn't get the job which is a first for me.

James unfortunately that is the nature of a lot of positions in GA; I moved here from CA and was astounded that I could not find a direct hire position. I have a suggestion: Go to the GA DOL website and find out where your local career center is and go and speak to a counselor about how to best utilize your skill sets. I know exactly what you mean about the lack of direction/professionalism for some of GA's temp agencies.

James, I think it's also safe to say that the direct company applicant evaluation and hiring process is broken too. I've put out justas many apps with much less results though. I read getting hired now is a "numbers game", apply in volume and wish for the best. The only place I have had one on one contact with anyone in a position to even talk about a job opening has been at a job fair. I'm hoping things get better in the fall when vacations end. Hope you find something reasonable soon. Best

Talent Acquisition / Recruiting

Hi James,

I understand you aren't in an ideal situation right now, but it looks like you are really working hard and are determined to find that right role! I have total faith that you will land the job you want, as long as you keep working hard like you are. It's good that you at least have temp work right now and can continue your search. What are the types of jobs you are interviewing for? Maybe I can help with your search. In regards to the temp agencies, I know a lot of companies are starting to use them for their hiring purposes, that way they don't have to hire people to do it themselves. It's not ideal, but helps certain companies hire quicker and more efficiently.

I hope this helps!

-Mark
