Fustrated

I've been in the Merchant Marine all my working career, now I am at the age where I am having medical issues which prevent me from going to sea. So every time I have an interview and explain my shipboard duties and the responsibilities it seems as if they become intimidated, I also explain that my computer skills are Linux based, so what's the problem.

I don't know about Merchant Marines, but I wouldn't mention anything about my health. Also, explain how the duties you have will be an asset to their company, and explain how to compare what you have and show the similarities to your skills to what the skills and responsibilities they are looking for. The age part I completely understand. I'm having the same issue - as I'm sure there are people on this site that are going through the same thing. They say there aren't any age, sex, disabilities, etc discrimination issues in the workforce, but there are. There is a website that I started using recently; it's retirementjobs.com. It even has a list of companies that specifically hire mature workers. Just don't give up. You've got it! And the same to the rest of the Seasoned Workers here! :-)

Robert Andrews, why don't you stop with your dumb preaching ? No one wants to hear it. People come here hoping to find a job or job advice, NOT to listen to your stupid end times or political crap. Do yourself a favor and JUST SHUT UP.

Hi, as a retired Mariner I can relate. There is still age discrimination and huge liability for employers who make a wrong hire. Have you thought about turning your years of experience into consulting or training.....?

Hi Guy Wilson - I can't say I know all that much about Merchant Marine work, but what kind of responses are you usually getting from interviews?
