I applied online to several reputable construction companies for a Project Manager position. Thinking back, I should have included a cover letter with each application and resume to stand out with corporate recruiters. Does anyone read cover letters anymore? All my experience and skills are on my resume but I still have time to go back and add a cover letter if that’s going to boost my chances to get an interview. What should I put on a cover letter that isn’t already on the application and resume? Suggestions??

Exactly, what is not on your resume OR highlight something you did at a job that relates to the position you want. Yes they do read them. I once converted a success rate that was at the time I took it over in the mid 30s to over 90 percent. You can bet I high lighted that. things that make you stand out. Good Luck!

I've asked myself the same question about cover letters but I've learned that it doesn't hurt to have one because you never really know what going to make a difference between you and another applicant. Think of it as an introduction to your resume. What can you tell the hiring manager about skills, accomplishments, and experience that isn't on your resume. Keep it short, sweet, and on point with the job.

Hi Armando: I definitely think your instincts are right on - cover letters can be a great way to sell yourself, as well as explain any gaps on your resume. You can also use cover letters to express your enthusiasm about a specific job role or how much you like the company and its mission. Remember, the cover letter shouldn't be a summary - think of it as just one additional piece of the puzzle that helps you show why you're the best person for the job. Hope this helps!
