How can I get hired from a job lead?

I was introduced to someone at a party this weekend that told me about a job opening at his company. I went to the company website to check out the job info yesterday and I want to apply for the job but should I use his name as personal reference on the application even though we don’t know each other that well? Also, should I automatically expect him to put in a good word for me to get an interview call-back?

Anthony don't ever assume anything or use a person as a reference without their knowledge. Giving you general hiring information is different from vouching for a person you met in passing. I would suggest reaching out to get inside information and see if a reference in your favor would even be heloful

I am a manager and I had someone I know inquire and apply for a position in my company and it became a nightmare. I work 70 hrs a week and for 3 weeks 20 of those weekly hours went to being a point of contact for this person. It was a complete waste of my time being the middle person for him and HR especially since when it came down to it he couldn't follow the simple directions I gave him and he failed the drug test which then looked bad on me. Waisting company resources and time on an applicant who all along knew in fact he would not pass a drug test. So be very careful as to who you say referred you as your action do not only affect you.

Try to find out the type of person this acquaintance is he may or may not be the type of person you want to be connected to. The up side is that by using their name you have not only the ability to be recommended by a valued employee of the company you are interested in but he may be able to give you some additional information about the job. 1. Contact the person who told you about the job 2. Tell him of your interest 3. Ask if they have a referral program at his company 4. Ask for permission to tell the employer you heard about the opportunity from him By following this common courtesy you will let the person know that you value his connection and are looking out for his/her name within their company and they may be more apt to put in a good word with the hiring manager. The added bonus you may build a friendship with another person that has a connection within your current friend base. Companies like to hire people who are referred by current or past employees this benefits them in that. 1. People tend to associate with people who are similar in values to themselves 2. There is a stronger likelihood that the candidate is qualified for the position 3. It provides a mentor within their organization to help the person acclimate to the company culture 4. It may provide a less costly onboarding with a qualified candidate As always be sure you represent your self in a way which if you were providing the same courtesy as you would expect. Good Luck

I would say no on both counts, but mentioning that he gave you the "heads-up" concerning the position and good luck

The key is to use this info in the interview. Consider, "One of your employees recommended this role. While I do not know him well, he spoke highly of the opportunity. I want to make the right move, and the feedback seemed to fit my long-term goals."
