Overqualified
My friend earned a JD last year, has 2 BAs, and is still pursuing the bar. He needs to work, but keeps getting denials with the overqualified narrative, commenting on in his impressive credentials. No doubt prospective employers are concerned about retention risks, even though he assures them of HS commitment. How does he overcome this for Analyst/policy/legislative jobs he's applying for? It's so frustrating. Suggestions?

The field of law is so oversaturated now, anyone just receiving thier degree are having a very difficult time finding work.
My cousin graduated with a JD, and passed the bar. He couldn't find a job with a firm anywhere and non legal jobs refused to hire him because he was overqualified.
He ended up going into the military as an officer and now works military law through the Judge Advocate General.
Did your friend specialize in a certain kind of law? If business law, check around with local businesses and small tech firms to see if they need a full time legal advisor on board.

He should try showing them the benefits of having him on the team and how the skills he acquires will not only benefit the department he works in, but also the company.
Stop putting experience/credentials on resumes and applications that exceed the jobs' requirements. Current HR theory actually considers too much qualification on an applicant's background as an unacceptable risk. Crazy, but sadly true!
