Job Termination discussion during pregnancy

Not sure if I have been discriminated based on national origin or pregnancy or harassment from my boss including HR. They are saying my position will be terminated at the end of next year or early 2018 which is right before my visa expiry and few months after my delivery due date in march 2017. am the only person who has been terminated and i was told due to budget issues, position has been terminated. no performance issues or no complaints against me. when i asked why only me, all they can tell me is that its highly confidential and they cannot give any more information other than budget issues due to change in business direction.

i dont know whom to approach..its very stressful to me to have all these conversation during my pregnancy. even HR says they are being fair to me by giving one year notice. I tried contacting eeoc but i didnot get any reply..i tried to approach couple of attorney in this area but i didnot get any solid help from anyone so far.

if anyone go through this message, please advice whom i can contact

Thank You.

Woman Children Family Therapist at Connecticut Department Of Social Services

Hi Manasa, So sorry to hear about your job loss during such a critical point and time in your life. There’s sort of an un mentioned rule that exist in mostly all of the US states in regards to the employer and employee relationship. At Will Employment labor law for contractual relationships in which an employee can be dismissed by an employer for any reason and without warning. Google your state to see if this law is applicable. One exception to this rule of course is discrimination which I would encourage you to pursue if you strongly feel your rights have been violated. Since management forewarned you about your job loss use the remainder of your time there to negotiate the best severance package to cover what you determine will be your immediate needs during the time you will be out of work. Think about health benefits and time off or maternity compensation benefits accumulated for years of service. Make a list of co-workers or managers you can request reference letters from to use when you begin your job search again. Update your social media and online career profiles to show off career accomplishments and goals. Start posting to job openings to test the marketplace related opportunities in your field. Explore all other options within that company but be prepared to move forward once those options are exhausted. Best of luck to you with your pregnancy. I’m sure the new addition to the family will help alleviate current anxiety and stress.

This sounds so stressful, I'm sorry you're going through this. I'm glad they're giving you a good heads up though. What did your attorneys say? It might be that your time is better spent on finding a new job, honestly
