Amazing interviews, yet goose eggs......
I have been working my butt off trying to get a semblence of the type of management positions I held before I contracted a severe kidney disease that put me on dialysis for 3 1/2 years. By exercise, following doctors orders to the letter and a strict diet and meditation, I got myself off dialysis and permission to return to work. This is very important, because my income had dropped fro $50,000-$60,000+ to 1/5 during that time not working. (S.S benefits only) Prior to this I had worked in high-end hotels and restaurants on both coasts (including beginning my mgt. career in Beverly Hills for 7 years). I'm from the Pennsylvania area originally and reside here now. Over the course of 20+ years, I went from a waiter in a 5 Star hotel to the youngest Dir. of F+B in the LA area in a 4-5 Star hotel. I worked with some celebrity chefs. As a G.M. managed a restaurant that received "The Best Of" in a site in Pa's. version of Bev. Hills. After 3 1/2 yrs. of Dialysis, I dropped 120 lbs. and look much like I did as a college freshman. So I look thinner ( I'm 6'1" 185). But I feel great. I was honest on my cover letters/ resume about the kidney failure, but the rest of my experience is stellar. To make things worse, one item on my resume doesn't seem to get the credit I deserve. About 15 yrs ago I managed 2 popular restaurants for, probably the most successful restauranteurs on the east coast when he only had 6 properties (he now has around 40+). I saw some serious problems and potential major corruption with a G.M . I assisted. I wasn't believed and actually accused of some of his malfeasance. I was to be suspended for something I didn't do when I was offered a multi-outlet mgt. position in a major hotel and took it. The next week that G.M. went on a drug binge disappearing with 2 girls, leaving his family and job during New Year's Week. Instead of an apology, somehow that famous restauranteur resents me and I feel Blacklisted because "I told him so!" Now after everything I've overcome, no one hires me for even assistant mgt jobs, yet I've been told many times my resume is the best my interviewers have seen and in many cases told I have more experience than them. Currently, I just pick up part-time catering shifts for survival.
Hi Warren,
I come from a restaurant background myself, my parents owned and ran a tavern for over 23 years. I am sorry this is happening to you, but I truly believe you can get back out there and on your feet again. Congrats first off for feeling better! You really needed that time to heal yourself and get well which is a great thing!
So let's work on your profile (resume) here as I noticed it's not completed yet. The first thing you will want to do is take a few minutes to completely fill out your profile. Make sure to include your current location, previous jobs with description, and education. This will help other Jobcasers as well as myself to send you jobs they run across that might be good for you. I wanted to find a few, but I am not sure where you are located.
After you have done this, you can use these steps to start your job search: 1.Click on “Jobs & Companies” at the top of the page 2.Enter a job into the search field that says “Position” 3.Click on the blue button to search for that position in your area 4.Once the list is up, click on “View Job" of any you are interested in to apply.
Make sure when you go into a job interview do not mention that previous experience or anything about what happened. Stick to the present/positive things and look to the future.
Update your resume and make sure your skill set matches with the job description. Tell them that although you have a lot of experience you do not mind starting at a different position because you would really enjoy working with their team. Many managers, etc. can think because you have a lot of experience that you are looking to be in a manager position only. Be clear with what you are looking for and be enthusiastic. I know it's hard to let go of all the negativity that has happened, but once you do you will find what you deserve!
Update that resume here on Jobcase and I am happy to assist you with job searches Warren should you need them : )
Again, let me know if you need anything further and I wish you the best!
