
How To Answer Salary History When You Know You Were Underpaid
I just had to fill out an on-line application who asked for my salary history. The last two jobs I worked at were temp assignments and although they were in my field, I was grossly underpaid. How do I answer this especially if the position pays much more than you were making? I can answer that in an interview, but how do I address this on a computerized form? TIA!

I was in a trainning class how to dress and do the interview and how to fill out the paper work to get you the interview. What rate would you want to get payed at ? I was told to put in "current market rate"

Put down the salary that you expect from them.

I would put down how much I got paid, and then wait for an interview, and at that time sell myself so they can see that I'm worth more than what I was getting paid. And sometimes if that goes well and the employer wants to hire you they will let you know what the position is paying with room for advancement. Hope this help.

Hi Suzette, short answer is: You can't. Welcome to the wonderful world of online applications where the company has all the power and control. I assume the salary form is a mandatory form which will only accept numerals. Shoot too high and the computer will not let you move to the actual "human eyes" round of the interview process. Shoot too low and you may get to actually speak to a real human but that also means that you are locked into the salary range you submitted. It's a real catch 22. My best advice (and it's not all that good to be honest) is to shoot lower than you'd prefer in hopes of moving to the actual interview round, then you can try renegotiating if it gets to the offer stage. Worst thing they can say is "NO" then you have the option of passing on the job or taking less than you wanted.

I have been told that companies will not give out salaries any more by those who would know. I have fudged my salary before without any repercussion, so.....

Just put "negotiated" or "project based"

I would skip answering that.....unless it absolutely required you to do it, which isn't fair.

Can you put negotiating on the online app?
Having been in the same boat as you, I put nego or upon request or market rate but I never tell what I was paid, I never answer age questions or any question that may tell my age, there are questions that may not be asked on a form or in a interview, for example I could ask if you have reliable transportation but I cannot ask if you have a car, your reliable transportation might be the bus or your kid sisters bike unless having a car is part of your job it can't be asked yet employers do it all the time. You can if you wish tell what you made but they probably can't ask you former employer ( depending on your areas laws) . Spend a few minutes and look up what they can and can not ask, it will make answering those pesky questions a lot easier. Best Wishes on your job hunt.
