How can I stay motivated in a negative work environment?

This is a new job and I’m doing more than my fair share of the work but my other co-workers spend their day chatting, gossiping, and walking around the office. Management is aware but doesn’t want to take on the ‘bad boss’ role. I like the work but the workplace is bringing me down.

Man pray on it my brother. God WILL work this out for you. You are his child and he loves you and knows your pain. Pray on it my brother, no one in the flesh can do what God can do for you. Stay firm bro.

I have been through this before and its not a pretty picture. I was reading the other posts and lots of them are so right. You will witness some of this mess you are going through to some degree, no matter where you go. It seems to be the worst in warehouses or places where a degree or some type of higher education is not required. Sad to say, but someone pointed that out to me years ago, and I see it as being so true.

I have worked in warehouses and I have worked in banks and fortune 500 companies; even though their is gossip and pettiness in higher positions, there is a certain way those people go about it that it never gets out of hand and there are no fights breaking out in the break room nor people running to the office crying everyday and complaining on each other. I guess they hide it better, to a certain extent, but it is nowhere near the level it is at entry level jobs.

When you have low morale and pettiness going on rampantly at the work place, it is the supervisors faults! If he or she had more control and rank over his or her employees, the pettiness would be null and void. One of my most memorable jobs was my first job as a cashier. I was 16 year old. 2 of the ladies there were having an affair on their husbands. They were cashiers like me, and each were dating men that worked at the store, but were in different departments. Everyone knew it, but nobody ever talked bad about the ladies openly and no one ever brought it to the head supervisor's attention. (I don't think he would have condoned it- or let it go on- being that one of the men was another supervisor out there)

Our supervisor would not have had it like that. He kept a tight reign on all of us, and the whole store. He simply did not play! He was not a mean man, but he ran the store with an authority and respect. He made the guys come in neat and wear a uniform daily. They could not have long hair past their shoulders, we could not dye our hair crazy colors and we could not work there tatted down with crazy tattoos. Neither the men nor women could wear piercings all over their face and ears.

If someone came into the store with baggy jeans and their butts showing, they were made to pull them up or leave the store, after being refused service. Shirts and shoes had to be worn by all customers.

If there ever was any disagreements between employees, it was resolved immediately. I don't recall gossip and pettiness among the workers in the back or front and as far as I am concerned, that was the best supervisor I ever had.

Those were real superiors we had back then. he didn't play and therefore, he had all the employees respect and we all had a peaceful work environment. The only headache were the rude customers at times, but other than that, I have good memories of the job, and that was 21 years ago.

Good management like that is unheard of now! So my suggestion to you is to get out while or if you can, it is only going to get worse. Do your job as efficiently as you can, but also be looking for something else. You are too valuable a person to stay in a dead end job like that with co-workers like that, and a manager that is not going to do anything about it.

If this has been going on for since you first started, learn how to deal with it, and try to be positive influence on others. If that does not work, then let others know how you feel or the HR dept. if that does not work, find a new job , and don't waste time trying to change others. Learn how to go around and deal with that kind of people or environment.
I believe there are books on this subject, one can google or research. In my experience, I just learn how to deal with it, or move on. I will say this, if it is a going no where job, it is time to move on.

Good luck! God bless

Negative environments are all over and I always had to make the best of a bad situation. It is exhausting and it can also make you shy of future situations. Best to keep your self above that bad egg (somehow they are always the one that stays with the job and its a bigger nightmare when the bad egg is the boss!). Been there and done ALL that. Don't become them.

I totally understand your situation, because many times you end up doing other people 's responsibilities and that's where it really ends up no being fair.

I would tell myself...this is a learning experience. Try as hard as it is...ask yourself "what did you learn from this negative experience...and if you could change something (solution) what would it be and how can this situation help you in the future....hopefully on your next interview

Do your best to shine. Others make that easier for us when this type of stuff is going on. One day it will pay of. Believe me someone will see you. It sounds to me it's your time to shine.
