Art Manager, Art Director, Graphic design

The art side of publishing has cost many good workers there jobs in the last decade. At 55 I am having trouble finding an Art department job outside of publishing. I feel you need to know someone for management positions and I seem to be over qualified for design positions. I live in northern New Jersey and I am working outside my field. Not sure if I just need to make a career change. I am an also an outdoor sportsman enthusiast. Not sure if anyone has some suggestions.

In the same boat here for 3 years. Marketing oneself is almost a full time job. You need to have connections for sure, and even then, that does always help. Companies do not want to pay for the experience of we elders. Be cautious of the project sites. They usually charge for membership and there too, everyone needs something but have no budget.

Hi Jerry: Thanks for posting to Jobcase! I think one of the big issues is that you're living in an area where there's a lot of competition for graphic design/art director jobs. If relocation isn't an option, why not go into business for yourself? Tip your toes in the freelancing pool by checking out sites like Guru.com and Upwork.com, where you can apply for projects. It might be a cool new move for you!
