First Day as an Intern

It's my first day as an intern at a new company - any advice for how to feel more comfortable around a bunch of people who seem to know exactly what they're doing?

If everyone knows exactly what they are doing, they all know you're new and if previous experience wasn't a requirement and any of them appear to be rude because you don't know what to do, politely remind him/her loud enough, while smiling, so as many people hear as possible that any advice would be appreciated because you were hired knowing you have no previous experience. Kill em with kindness, always, it confuses even the biggest of Douchebags! Good luck! I'm not sure about any experience you may or may not have, no disrespect!

Ask questions, and be open to any new work they may toss your way. Volunteer when you can.

Don't worry. You have unique perspectives to bring. Believe in your opinions and be open to feedback. Even your coworkers really know what they are doing, then they will be easily be able to convince you to rethink your opinions. More likely than that though, they won't know exactly what they are doing, and your opinions will be valuable in pushing their thinking!

Reach out to them! If there is a common lunch area, try going up there around lunch time and asking if you can join a group - odds are they will say yes! Once you get to know more people in the new company, you will start to feel more comfortable there.

Hi Rachel! I understand how that feels. I find that people often have a skewed view of their own work versus others. Because they're constantly engrossed in their own responsibilities, they often view other people's work as mysterious and more complicated than what they're doing. Try talking to some people around the office about what they do and you'll find that most people will be able to explain their responsibilities in a way that's understandable, even if the work they're doing requires skills you don't have (yet). You'll also be able to introduce yourself to more people around the company and be able to get a better understanding of how your company works as a whole.

That's great that you earned a spot as an intern, congrats!! The thing is everyone was new once, they all know how it feels. My advice is to know that everyone is busy working but you just need to focus on what YOU need to get done. Set small goals for yourself and accomplish them. You'll do well just work hard :) Also be sure while you are there to connect with people and grab their contact info. It might come in handy later. How long are you there for? Have you made any friends?
