The workplace is different because of Covid!

I was laid off on October 6th. On Wednesday this week I had an interview. I was offered the position yesterday. That was just one week. I was terrified because I thought it would take much longer. The workforce is appointment only because of Covid and you only get one hour. Things are much different! But what I found to be better was the fact that you must be strategic and organized. Prior to this it was easy to spin your wheels out there looking for a job. I do feel that it is very hard for employers to find people willing to work. A hairstylist friend is having trouble keeping her doors open because her staff didn’t want to return to work after Covid hit. She is struggling because of others unwillingness to work. It’s just so interesting seeing all sides to this. The previous company I worked for was short staffed in the warehouses. People would call and go through interview but would turn down the job. My point? It’s definitely the workers market right now. Make sure your resume is spot on and cover letter highlights your skills. Take advantage of virtual job fairs and all resources available from your local library to your workforce center. And definitely check out your local staffing agencies. They are a fantastic resource to get your foot in the door at a great company you’d otherwise not have the opportunity to work for. That being because they hire only through staffing agencies. It’s tough. But it’s always tough looking for a job. And these days...Employers need you and badly!

Third Shift It Control Room Incident Manager at Hp

I think the other reason some employers are having trouble filling spots is that some workers are getting $600 per week in unemployment and they don't want to go back. I know this was the case earlier in the year. My neighbor told me his daughter in law got laid off in the spring as a waitress, is still collecting $600 per week, isn't looking for work and is hiking the rocky mountains. Meanwhile I'm working 45 hours a week in two part time jobs, underemployed, and not taking a dime from the government. Kind of irritating.

Yes, I agree as well, is discouraging when you are up against 50-100 other applicants and age does matter, they will tell you it doesn't but it does. If people would only realize that older employees tend to take less time off, they don't have little ones that get sick, they don't need time off for any school functions or doctors appts. for the kids. We do have our positive side even if we are older!!!

Totally agree with Frederick. I've been out of work since May due to Covid. Apply for many jobs no phone calls or responses. Same age as Frederick.

How can you say its a worker's market. when every job I've applied to has anywhere from 10 to 100 applicants and sometimes more.Your post kinda sounds like your gloating, and now your an expert at job hunting. We are all doing what you did to find a job. Your young. Wait till your my age (61) and you have to deal with ageism.

Fantastic Feedback @Allison England , Thanks soooo much for sharing and Congrats on landing this new job opportunity. Can I ask what company did you just land a new job with?

You are Right! It is a workers market right now in terms of new job availability among essential employers. Although COVID-19 awareness, policies and procedures still remains a high concern among active job seekers. Most companies have uploaded COVID-19 banner awareness ads on their career pages in order to inform applicants about their prevention and safety measures but we still encourage applicants to practice due diligence and get all the information needed before accepting job offers.

Virtual job fairs and hiring events are very popular right now. I attended one a couple of weeks ago for a national employer and found it surprisingly informative, efficient and practical for a remote hiring event experience.

We have an updated list of local and national hiring event (virtual & face to face) listing available on the #hiringnews topic page if anyone if interested in seeing what's still available.

Best of Luck to you on your new job journey and throughout all your future career endeavors @Allison England :-). Please continue to keep us updated on your progress!!
