So I Think I Dodged A Bullet!!
So I've had my share of interviews and I usually know what to prepare for. However, I am currently looking for another job position and I received an email stating they viewed my resume online or it was given to them as a referral. I called the person and when I spoke to them, they asked if I could send a copy of my resume and...get this...if they could have the last 4 digits of my SSN. First things first, I've never met these people yet and you're asking me for something very personal. And second, you just told me you received my resume off a job site or got it as referral from someone. This makes no sense to me, so I didn't send them anything again. Has this happen to anyone before?

Actually many recruiters and the companies they work with use the last 4 digits of your SSN with something like like your initials or birth month as an ID in their systems to make sure you don't apply for the same position through multiple recruiters. Be careful, but this may be legitimate. On the other hand, if they ask for your full SSN before hiring you or for any banking information, you should probably run.

Yep, definitely sounds like a scam. Glad you didn't send anything. I seem to see lots of people posting about this sort of thing happening to them. At least we're all becoming aware of it.
There are companies that will ask for a copy of the resume due to the fact that they see several resumes come in every day. So they ask for a copy so that they don't have to go look for it. As for giving your social, that is not right. Your social has nothing to do with an interview.
