10 ways to avoid Scam job opportunities
I have seen several posts on specific job scams. I thought I would put together a list based on personal experience and various job seeker reports.
- Never give your bank account information to a 'company' that offers a position through email or Google hangout.
- Do not cash checks sent to you for equipment purchases through the mail.
- Check the URL! If you are sent a link to whatever.gov, make sure when you click on the link the Web address in your browser is https://whatever.gov. Scammers often have redirects to a different website. Check through a search engine what the company's corporate site is, to verify. (Check for misspellings.)
- If you cannot speak to a person, it's a scam.
- Ask to speak to a current employee or customer. If they won't provide either, HANG UP!
- Don't believe that just because they have a website that they are legitimate. If it is not a well known company, call the phone number or send a customer inquiry message. If the number is out of service or you don't get a reply, they are fake.
- Any offer that starts with 'We are opening an office in (your city) is a scam. International corporations don't recruit that way.
- Never agree to accept packages and re-ship them.
- If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
- Report scams to: Federal Trade Commission 1-877-382-4357
Good Luck!

Why do you say to never accept packages and re-ship them? Do you mean as in employment or just in general?

What happens if you already gave your personal info? SS# and photo I'd? They had me fill out with holding papers also but they didn't ask for money

Hi Deena, I've been meaning to put together a list too, this is fantastic! The only things I'd add are:
- Trust your gut! If something seems fishy, it's always safer to cut and run. and
- When in doubt, ask here, message me, or send an email to info@jobcase.com! I absolutely love helping people out by researching the legitimacy of companies. There will always be people to help you, you just have to ask!
Thanks so much, Deena, this is truly a great post. Here's a link to the FTC too: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0243-job-scams
