Is it essential to always have a professional careers mentor?

I would love to hear opinions on this question. I have been hearing mixed reviews and nothing concrete on either side.

That's a great question. Some of the best advice I was ever given regarding my career was to find mentors, and try to learn everything you can from them and let them help you foster professional skills. I think that it's okay if you aren't able to find someone at your workplace to become your mentor - but there is no reason you can't look outside work! There is always something to be learned from someone else. I hope this helps, and look forward to seeing other people's answers!
