Does anyone know how long it takes to get hired after you've taken the postal exam.

It can honestly take a while. I believe once you take the exam, you're on a waiting list for openings, and they will only offer a position when they have an opening, and they get to your name on that list. Be prepared also to only work part-time at first, sometimes for years before a full time position comes open. I have a friend whose cousin worked part-time (meaning she delivered mail every Saturday and sometimes filled in for the regular carrier when they took a day off), for 10 years before she was finally hired for a full time position. Be prepared to be patient, work a lot of one day a week schedules, use your own personal vehicle, and also be aware the Post Office considers delivery a production job. The pay is great, but they only allow a certain number of hours for you to work. For example, if they think it should take 6 hours total for you to sort the mail for your route and deliver it, and it actually takes you 8 - you still only get paid for 6 hours. And the full time positions are very rare - most people retire from this job, and you almost always have to work part time before they consider you for a full time position, and it's seniority based, so the longer you work part time, the more they'll consider you for a full time position once one opens up. If you're new - you won't get a full time position unless everyone else that's been there longer turns the job down first....
