2 questions about unemployment in Silicon Valley

I got laid off yesterday (Merry Christmas). I have 2 questions:

  1. The last time I applied for jobs was 1984. What are "interview clothes" these days for middle management positions?
  2. How bad is the age discrimination in Silicon Valley?

Interview clothes - look at their website to get a lue how they dress - if an outside recruiter is involved, they should know - If in doubt, most places are much more casual then when we were looking last, Richard - no suits - starched collar shirt, tie and sweater are fine - sports jacket if in winter...on Zoom - open starch collar shirt and no tie or jacket ....

I just wanted to say I am sorry you were laid off right before the holidays! I would suggest Blue, Black business suite. I would imagine some companies like Apple, Google are a little more laid back for interview purposes, Suit/Tie. Age Discrimination.. It's alive and Well. I am experienceing it so I am focusing on CA State jobs now.

Watch out those Indian head hunter, they will bombed you with all the temp job, and low-ball the pay. I got laid off before holidays, the company send email to other companies in the same field. What a mistake for me not to op-out this. I got so many emails or calls for every temp job in my fields, all from Indian head hunter. They all knew the hiring managers for follow India guys, and they told me they didn't need to go through HR. That is the game now, watch out, don't spend too much time con the craps offered by them.

I was laid off after the off shore parent decided not to continue our project here. HR help us to send out email to companies in our fields. What a mistake, I didn't op out this, and now I got bombed with calls and emails from Indian head hunters. Last one was 7 days for oracle BPM. All of them are contract jobs, and each of job, there are at least 10 Indian ladies try to sale it to you.

  1. No tie, khaki's, button down long sleeve clean shirt, nice shoes, and most times a jacket.
  2. I'm over 50, so I have felt the age discrimination probably more so than others. I seem to do really well with the intro interview via phone, maybe the second phone/video, then face-to-face..........nothing.

Personally, I would suggest you stick with a suit and tie, especially for mid-management. If you have not applied in that long, it is going to be an eye-opening experience. You need to register at most of the job hunting sites (Indeed, Glassdoor, etc, and these places pull jobs from other sites, including monster.) You look at jobs there, then they take you to a page describing the job in detail, and how to apply for the position. Then you basically enter all of the data that you would on an application at an onsite interview, so their system has your graduated from years, your visa and disability agreements, etc. I recently lost a job after 18 years, in HR primarily..... All those years my advice to others was to never stay so long in the same place. The opportunities to acquire new skills and new ways of doing things is often not easy for so long. You might consider finding recruiters - individual headhunters, perhaps on Linked In and get to know one or two who will work for you.

  1. LinkedIn profile, experience/skills based resume distilled down to your value statement (that matches your LinkedIn profile, posting on the top job boards, refresh your network/reach out for ideas and assistance in the search, work the funnel of leads that turn up, be patient - time will surface opportunities that fit your desired role.
  2. Exists but it is more connected to your compensation. There will be every attempt to fill your skilled position opportunities with lower cost (usually younger) talent. Your value has to be real and you will need to demonstrate why a particular opportunity needs your skills.

Good luck in your hunt!
