Shouldn't lunch break count as hours worked?

I work 8-5, five days a week with an hour lunch, but I'm technically paid 40 hours. I feel like that one hour really adds up after a while, like 5 hours a week, around 20 hours a month that I’m not getting paid despite being in/around the office.

this has been on my mind lately

Lunch Breaks are required by law at least 30 minutes which you are off the clock for.

You get an hour off for lunch. During ths time I assume you are not mandated to remain at your desk, or wherever your job requires. I presume this means you are able to eat where you please, or take time for some personal business. Don't complain. Why should your boss be required to pay you to eat? The next thing is you will want him to buy your lunch as well. I cannot follow your thinking.

Why should it? If you're not doing anything for the company, why should you get paid? If you choose to spend your lunchtime in and around the office, that's your prerogative, but you don't have to. You can go outside you can get in your car and leave or do whatever for yourself.

You do not get paid for taking your lunch. If you don't take a lunch, you're working free.

In CA, the law is that employees must take at least a 30 minute uninterrupted meal break. They should eat away from their work area/desk. If you are eating at your desk and you answer the phone or someone stops by you and ask you for a file..you are on the clock and your employer must pay you an hour of pay. If you are required to attend a mandatory meeting or training you must be paid by your employer.
