Get Experience - Get Hired!

Do employers value unpaid internships as qualified work experience? I noticed everyone hiring prefers experience but how am I supposed to get experience if I'm never given the opportunity to get some? I’ve been trying find a job in social services but I’m always overlooked because of my lack of work experience. I found an unpaid internship that I qualify for and would be interested in if it’s going to eventually help me find a job.Thoughts?

Experience is very important. I suggest that the type of resume you submit to employment be based on your skills more than where you developed them from. The longer you have done it, the better.

Yes take the internship. Many times internships turn into a paying job. You also use internship on a resume and/or job application. Good luck

That's what I am running into. Employers post an entry level job but they want a 4 year degree and 3-5 years experience to be considered. And the job pays $10/hr. It's the classic Catch-22. They won't hire anyone without experience, but they don't want to hire someone to give them experience because it means they have to train them. They also don't want to pay a decent wage at the same time. It's incredibly frustrating.

Any experience is experience, whether its volunteering, nonprofit, unpaid internship, etc. Not only will you gain experience, you will network and that is huge these days.
