No luck finding work
I have been in Oregon for over a month now and still can't find work. I have applied any I can. But unfortunately don't have a lot of experience other then food and want to do something more along the lines of office work but have to stay close to where I am living due to transportation. Any suggestions.

Hi emalee evans - have you considered going to a temp agency and filling out their paperwork? A lot of the time companies are looking for experienced office workers, and it can be hard to bridge the gap between the food industry and office. Being a temp for a little bit can be a great way to get that necessary experience, and then move onto something more permanent. Plus, you will get some great references and perhaps even get hired on full-time!
I hope this helps! Best of luck Emalee.
Hi, emalee evans I understand your frustration and it can be a difficult transition when you move to another state. From my experience in the culinary industry, I recommend if you want to transition into a new career in the administrative field to highlight your customer service skills, working with the public, how you build rapport with people during your time in the food industry. This is a big bonus in working in an office setting especially administrative - answering phones.
I would also contact social services in your area to look into what Matt Bornhorst suggested - temp agency that can place you in entry-level administrative/office positions where you can gain and develop the skills and experience required to grow. Temp agencies have contracts with many companies so it might be helpful.
Also, I recommend tweaking your resume to fit the job. I'm a chef manager with extensive customer service experience - I've worked one on one with clients/customers, provided one on one customer service, however, that's one transferable skill I have that I could place on my resume should I ever want to change careers.
I hope I was able to provide some insight that helped. I wish you luck on your job search. Don't give up even if you feel discouraged. It takes time and when it happens, it may be just the job that's the perfect fit for you. And you'll find that it was worth waiting for. May sound cliche now but you'll see.
