Salary negotiations and pharmaceutical companies

I am getting another interview with a pharmaceutical company that has been in business about 15 years. The company offers 1 specialty drug. The territory is brand new. I feel the salary in low given the overall salary of the field. It is about 10K lower than a primary care rep. Should I negotiate my salary? If so, any suggestions.

Hi Brandon,

I say take a combination of all these great suggestions. 1st: Research just like Mariah said and also look for info at the Library and other websites (governmental websites, ex. Labor Statistics); 2nd: Ask colleagues, this includes asking someone more senior that really knows you - this way you can get some idea how others may perceive you and you can weigh that in as necessary; 3rd: utilize a built-in time frame. For example state that if sales and/or territory growth is "X" within "Z" amount of time indicate that you want salary increase and/or stock options and/or percentage of sales increase. This way you show what you are worth, what you can do; and you give them the opportunity to make a fair and quality decision. By all means do not back down, you may have to put somethings (advances or opportunity for such) on the shelf for a moment and come back to the idea later; and never give up. Most of all believe in yourself. I wish you all the best!

Sometimes an offer is better than no opportunity. Look at the entire compensation package to see if a work/life balance is realistic with your personal goals.

Take Stock options or a percentage of increase to sales. That illustrates that you are willing to take a risk.

Depends totally on the "specialty drug." Not enough info to answer. But if I had to guess, I would say go for it with a clause that if this medication reaches a certain sales point, (and I am not in that field, so I don't know the specifics,) build in a mandate for a salary increase, 2X 10℅!

Hi Brandon: Great question! I think you should absolutely negotiate. One suggestion: come to the salary negotiation meeting armed with statistics about what the average pay is for someone in your location and with experience level (check out glassdoor.com for that info). Let us know what ends up happening!
