Is it okay to look away or make eye contact when answering questions during an interview?

I tend to automatically look away when asked questions. Somehow it helps my thought process but I don’t know how interviewers score this behavior.

I also look away. (Bc I'm an analytical thinker) it's also the way I was raised . Eye contact feels awkward. Maybe just try as much eye contact as u can.

Making eye contact is very important in any situation. It shows respect and truth to the other person. And especially in an interview.

I agree with most of these comments on maintaining eye contact (naturally), and the only thing I'd add is to make sure you're prepared for the interview so the questions don't catch you off guard too much so you have to ponder how to answer too long. You want to be fairly quick to answer so it does come across as honest and confident. Good luck! Hopefully we won't get too many off the wall questions that throw us off too much!! :)

Always make eye contact. But don't stare. If asked a question...If you look up it appears you are searching for an answer. If you look down, it appears you are being less than truthful. Take a brief moment before responding to a question. Snap responses make you appear rehearsed,. This would indicate you are unable to think on your feet. Remember. Your interview is an opportunity for the prospective employer to check you out. And it is your opportunity to check the employer out. If you are good at conversing with people you are not familiar, steer the interview into a conversation. If the interview is "tag team" ( more than one interviewer in the room) do not be afraid to assert yourself. Do not allow others to interrupt you while you are responding to a question.

It's best to always make eye contact its a build of confidence between you and the employer. Don't show nervousness either.

Not really....I tend to do look away. sometimes when talking to my girlfriend...it can be annoying to some....relax at interview ...dont stare at person but don't look away if answering a question that takes a little time...try not to get excited. Robert ...Wakefield, RI

Eye contact is good...but not extreme constant contact, you know? Whatever you do, don't look to the left when answering, as that indicates untruthfulness.

I can relate to this. I am from a country where it is considered disrespectful to look someone like an employer or an elderly person, directly in the eye. When I go on interviews, I have a very hard time trying to remember that in America you have to look them in the eye.

Its better that you look into their eyes and show a warm smile when answering creates confidence
