Starbucks Application

I applied for 3 different managerial positions at Starbucks online and got an almost immediate response from them saying "While we are impressed with your experience, after careful consideration, you have not been selected to move forward in the process." This email came back to me just 10 minutes after I submitted it. I have managerial and retail experience so, it's not the lack of experience. I was asked to fill out a questionnaire about Unemployment and SNAP. I was laid off from my job in August and have unfortunately had to collect unemployment (which hasn't been much) and SNAP benefits to help me pay my bills and feed my children. That shouldn't be counted against me should it? I've never had anyone ask those questions so, I found it really strange that they asked. Has anyone else experienced that?

yes. Companies ask those questions because they get tax breaks for hiring people who are on programs like SNAP or unemployment. I seriously doubt your denial had anything to do with that. More likely it was your work history, skills, or experience that generated that decision. I have been in the same position and in my case it was my age, I'm sure, because I had the experience and knowledge they were looking for, but when they asked the year of graduation, I know that killed it. I even had a recruiter call on the phone and tell me she had jobs that fit my resume and experience, and when she asked the year of graduation, she hung up on me. There are laws against discrimination for sexual orientation, religious beliefs, nationality, race, marital status, disability, skin color, and age, but it would be difficult to prove discrimination for any of those.

I would go to the Starbucks location you are interested in and introduce yourself to the manager or ask one of the employees. Ask if there is anything they can do to help you get an interview. Many times they will set up a meeting in person.

They may also be asking those questions for the WOTC or Work Opportunity Tax Credit - employers who hire job seekers with these things in their background can actually help the employer get additional tax credits.

Bias and discrimination is not supposed to exist anymore, but employers will use any excuse to reject you. "Although we were impressed with your resume, we have decided to move on with other candidates. We encourage you to explore other vacancies on our site." Unless you have had managerial experience specifically with Starbucks, I would apply for an entry-level position.

Most companies get a tax credit (or at least used to) when they know you’ve received benefits.

Maybe you should think about re-wording your resume or you may have a different type of management experience than they are looking for. Either way, there are plenty of jobs in the world! Regroup and get out there! It will happen!
