What should I do?

I'm currently working at Paddington Station for $7.25/hour, no benefits from 11am-7pm with 2 year olds. I have a job offer with Marriott Hotels as a front desk receptionist for $10/hour, little benefits, wonderful company and more in my line of work. But I just started a week ago at Paddington station. What should I do?

Congratulations. Don't second guess what you've accepted. Truth is, it is all relative. Only you can measure each organization's respective worth, be it real or projected. Good luck.

Always give a two week notice and let the other company know that you have to give a notice to the other company. Most companies will work with you nine out of 10 times. Most companies like that when you put that upfront to them. It lets them know that you don't bounce from job to job with the best offer.

Bill Marriott was a trusted friend and customer for me during the 80's and 90's. I have great respect for the son who maintained the Marriott legacy. But the other son sold his buildings through franchising. $10.00 an hour seems very low for a Marriott location, and I would inquire as to the ownership. If it is franchised, it would explain the low starting pay and minimal benefits. It would also mean that they are not truly a Marriott, and will eventually succumb to a loss of patronage, as patrons seek quality for their dollars.

We are really discussing a $450 a month increase in pay (half my SSI), so I would absolutely take the offer. You cannot suggest to Paddington Stn. that you will work until they find your replacement.

You must tell them your starting date with the Marriott, and that you can only assist them further until that time. They may want you to leave immediately, and your problem is solved. I'm pretty sure most of us would want this problem. If it is an authentic Marriott, know that you will have monthly and quarterly reviews, and pay will increase accordingly.

I love children, growing up with 9 younger siblings, and even considered being a Kindergarten teacher during the 70's. However, a month as an intern convinced me, adults are easier to handle. Respectfully, Philip M Brockman

I would take the better position I would just tell your boss that you feel the job isn't the best fit for you and give notice. It is no big deal to take a better position especially if your current position isn't working out the way you thought it would they will understand.

Caitlin,

I would suggest to see if you can accommodate both positions to maintain professionalism, but if this is not possible, you should consider accepting the new position being that it's a better opportunity from a realistic standpoint. Maybe consider speaking to your manager with Paddington and see if there's any flexibility, but be prepared to give resignation should you decide to choose Marriott. Good luck!

Good question! If you can alternate your schedule, that would be best. The other solution, you could ask if Marriott would be willing to let you work on the weekend only for front desk receptionist.
