Should I apply for a job at JCPenney?

I’ve noticed lately that a lot of JCPenney locations are going out of business, yet the one near me is still hiring. Do you think it’s worth putting in an application, or should I look elsewhere for retail work?

If it is free standing meaning not in a mall but it's own business definitely! What the company is doing is trying to get away from paying rent to other companies and opening free standing stores where jcpenney owns the building.

You could get a few good years of retail experience in, if hired to this location. I would not hesitate to ask about the future of that location in your interview with whomever is doing the hiring, to further ease your mind. The reason I say this, is that in today's era of jobs, you can't plan on having a job for 40 years until you stop working but plan to enhance you job experience along the years. You should be perfectly in your rights to ask this question, plus you're showing that you researched the company. The store would be allowed to hire if closing within the year.

Jc penny's is a fine store featuring clothing and many other items. While it is not uncommon for a store to switch names companies such as jc penny's and Sears have been around for years. Why Sears has been here since the pioneer days. If you're interested in working retail it would be a great place to start. It is strong because they carry a good product and people continue to shop there. All it would take is a strong marketing approach to make it come back. But do not be afraid of companies changing names. Sam Walton for example originally worked for Ben franklins. Then he started Walmart. His family carried the business along farther after he died to SAMs clubs. The experience you gain in retail is a plus. Best of luck.

The one here in Martinsville,Va. closed, so I really don't know what to tell you. I have a friend that lives in Bluefield,W.Va. & she works for J.C.Penney. She's been there for appx. 11 yrs. or more, so I really don't know, but good luck to you on your job search.
