Promised a raise and never got one

I’ve been working as a teacher in a public school for the past year. When I signed on, the lady interviewing me assured me that though the starting pay seemed low there would be a pay increase “very soon, any week now.” Well it’s been more than a couple weeks, it’s been about 52! She says there is nothing she can do because it is up to the union to negotiate the contract… Has this happened to anyone else? It seems unfair to promise a raise and then never get one.

Never, Never, Never take a job based on unwritten promises. If it's not in writing, it doesn't exist. Since it's a union job there isn't much you can do except maybe look for a better job.

Do you know who the union liaison is? If you do, try talking to them so they can bring the issue up with the union to get that moving.
