Getting frustrated

I lost a position that I really loved in May of 2018. Since then I have been trying to find another position in the same field. I currently have a job but it is in retail and I hate it. I have two degrees and I am applying for the positions that I am highly qualified for. I have been on countless interviews and told that I am one of the top candidates, however I'm getting told they went with someone more qualified, or after applying I receive an email or letter stating they went with a more qualified candidate. I don't know what I am doing wrong.

General Manager at Sears Auto Center

I know the feeling, im going through the same issue. February 22 2019 lost my job due to company filling bankruptcy. ( Sears Auto center) I did find a job but not the same field... I gone to countless interviews and i qualify or i overqualified. Don't understand, until i kind of began asking other co manager's...they have all found jobs in the same field because they knew someone in the company. I was told they do the interviews but because they have to have an x amount of interviews done, but they really have a candidate for that position already. Or companies hire within which is something that's going on everywhere, which is find with me, but if you have a connection they will overlook it and you get hired due to the fact that someone pulled you in... Sad to say but that's my experience so far. Im still applying this week i applied to 10 position...still waiting :(

It's amazing how the unemployment rate is supposedly so low currently, yet I see in this forum that it's actually one of the toughest job markets. Keep plugging away by applying for career opportunities that you're qualified for. If you're continually a top candidate for jobs you apply for, then one will come along very soon. Best of luck!

Don't you like it when you hear "any city usa" is a great place to get a job which is then taken away by the comment "but it's very competitive".

There is a glut of college degrees and people seeking higher paying work out there that one expert says won't resolve itself until 2025. Everyone who has looked for a job recently knows this is not a good job market.

Heather,

Visit a close by to you vocational school, or community college, see if they provide career counseling services for a reasonable fee, and make an appointment to take the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), the Strong Vocational Instrument, and the Holland Occupational Code. Triangulate the results where if you see occupations recommended for you across all three assessments, those are likely strong areas for you. Then read Nelson Bolles, "What color is your Parachute?" to see how you can identify transferable skills from your life experience to new jobs in the venues that might fit you much more.

Also for self assessments on line for free:

THREE COMPREHENSIVE PERSONALITY & CAREER ASSESSMENTS

Career Preferences:

Holland Occupational Code: Copy the below into your browser window:

https://www.mynextmove.org

When you go to the first website: https://www.mynextmove.org My Next Move www.mynextmove.org My Next Move is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment & Training Administration, and developed by the National Center for O*NET Development.

Go to the third box to the right, TELL US WHAT YOU LIKE TO DO. Click on the Start with the arrow to the right:

TELL US WHAT YOU LIKE TO DO!

Now you will see the following screen:

O-Net Welcome to the O*NET Interest Profiler!

The O*NET Interest Profiler can help you find out what your interests are and how they relate to the world of work. You can find out what you like to do.

The O*NET Interest Profiler helps you decide what kinds of careers you might want to explore.

On each screen, click the next button at the bottom to continue. You can use the Back button at the bottom to re-read the instructions or change your answers.

                        Click on “Next ->

Answer questions about the type of work you might enjoy. We'll suggest careers that match your interests and training.

When you are through, you will be given three letters representing three categories of work, out of six, based on your three highest numerical scores;

They are:

S for Social - working with people to help them E - Enterprising - for those who want to start their own businesses R - for Realistic - for those who enjoy working with things like cars, electrical installation, raising fish, or working with animals A - for Artistic - for those who enjoy creating art whether Music, Paintings, Sculptures, or Drawings C - for Conventional - for those who enjoy working in organizations and offices I - for Investigative - for those interested in research, detective work, finding cures for diseases, etc.

The letter with the largest number goes first, since this is your primary interest area, so if you had the following scores:

S = 15 E = 23 R = 25 A = 30 I = 12 C = 18

As you can see in the example above, the results for the person would be: A (the highest number) R (the second highest number) and E, (the third highest number).

ARE

Next, you write down your three letters in the correct order, highest number to lowest, and go to this site:

Once you have your three-letter code from the Holland Occupational Code (for example SAI, or CRE), go to this site and click on your three-letter code:

Sixteen Personalities – How to Take

Instructions for Taking the 16 Personalities Assessment

The 16 Personalities Assessment is NOT:

A test – You cannot pass or fail it : ) A psycho-diagnostic instrument – it won’t analyze you : )

It is:

A powerful tool based on Jungian Psychology to help you to determine your inborn personality type, which, while it may change some over the course of your life, has many elements that will always be true to you. It is an excellent tool for finding career choices for you. It is a wonderful tool for understanding relationships. When you answer the questions, remember to think of yourself at home, NOT at work or school, and in your “shoes off” self. For instance, if you have a question that asks you: “Would you prefer to always plan where you go and what you do?” Don’t think of having to be at school or at work every day, think, “If I was on vacation from school or work, or home after work, which would I do? Just decide to go to see friends, or a game, or would I always want to plan where I go and what I do? Don’t spend too much time trying to ponder on your answers Remember, if you are not sure which to choose, think what would I do sixty percent (60%) of the time?

Good Luck!

Personality Preferences:

Jungian based Meyers – Briggs Type Indicator (free similar instrument)

https://www.16personalities.com/free-personality-test

After reviewing your results, you can click on “Start Reading” and leant about your personality type. You can then look at the list in the Section: “Explore Your Type,” and review “Career Paths” what studies have shown that many people with your type find as very satisfactory careers, and why. You can next explore “Workplace Habits” and the other choices to learn more about your personality!

Also go to www.truity.com and when you get there choose your four letters type, read about your type overview, you can copy and paste onto a word document, then click on careers, and copy and paste onto the word document. Next do a “Select All” and change the type face from yellow to black for everything. Now you will have an excellent list of careers that many people with your personality type find great satisfaction in. Last, copy the section “Careers that XyZX” Types should avoid, and paste that into your word document. Now you will know many careers that people with your type don’t find satisfaction with.

Also, please review the following: send me the four letters that you discovered explain your personality, and let me know the numbers associated with the letters, for example:

I (67%) S (56%) T (72%) J (52%) I will then explain a couple of alternative types I want you to look at, and decide which one best fits you!

There is a very strong correlation between type and career satisfaction!!!

Kingdomality Vocational and Career Preference Assessment:

https://kingdomality.com/the-personal-preference-profile-test/

Click on the Kingdomality link above and take the assessment. You will get a Medieval Personality Type which will reveal some interesting facts about your personality.

Last copy and paste your Kingdomality results onto your document. Your Kingdomality results may reveal you to be a Benevolent Dictator, Shepherd, Minstrel, White Knight, or Black Knight, or a few others. You may see some similarities in this type with your 16 personality results and Holland Occupational Code!

Please let me know about how accurate the above assessment is, in fitting you. This can help you review possible career interests, and majors to prepare for those careers!
