Should I start looking for something else?

I landed an amazing position and work with some great people about 4 months ago. It's a newly created position where I'm independent and basically in charge of my remote area. For the first four months, my departmental boss (the chief officer) was "out-of-sight/out-of-mind". When I interviewed for the job and on my orientation day (which was also the last time I physically saw my boss), he told me that this location was "my show" and that he was a "hands off" type of supervisor. Which he had been up until this point.

Well, I get a surprise visit from him last week. No email. No phone call. No warning. Just shows up for two days to basically hover over me. In the process of it all, he badgered me and blasted me on my job. All of which was surprise as he went directly to the customers (not the operations officer on-site) to literally find things wrongs. Since then, I have included him on all my emails which document my work as a measure to ensure that I was actually taking care of things. This week he contacts my customers just to "follow up" on some of the things he uncovered last week. Which stirred up a storm and now has created tension between some of my customers.

I'm not sure what empowered him to change his approach after several months of letting my handle things but I adapted. What bothers me somewhat though is that in our conversation last week, he mentioned briefly about wanting to take our office HR person to lunch... he wanted to put in a plug for "his friend" who needed a job. When I asked what kind of job, his response seemed fabricated (as if he was lying to me about what kind of job).

I got this weird feeling that he's trying to phase me out so that he can put "his friend" in the position. Is he starting trouble for me (trying to make me look bad) so that I either resign or get fired for negligence? Should I start poking around and look for something else? Am I just being paranoid?

Dallas, go with your gut. Deep down, ask your gut what is it trying to convey to you. The answer is there.

Dallas,

If I was in your shoes, I would request a meeting with your boss. If necessary, I would include his boss, too--especially if you can't reach a resolution with him. In the meantime, I would definitely be looking for another position. There is a lack of respect and integrity on behalf of your boss. Apparently, he lacks the professionalism to remain in his current position. For the most part, he won't be there too long himself. There's a right and a wrong way to conduct ourselves...& apparently, he has no home-training. Best wishes to you, my friend...& simply pray about it. God knows what you are in need of!
