Keep it Professional
I got a call back from a Sales job interview with a prestigious software company. Sounds like they're ready to make me a job offer but I’ve decided to go in different direction with another company. I want to make sure I turn down the job offer in a professional manner in case I need reapply in the future. How do I politely tell them I'm no longer interested in the position? Also what’s the best medium to communicate this information, email or phone call?

most companies won't or shouldn't be surprised that you are gone, they take forever to make decisions in this buyers market, so I'd just tell them thank you for considering me for your position, however it have accepted another position. by the time you apply to them for a future position, they will likely not Remember your face or name, and in any event it's not a big deal as this is the end result of dragging their feet on a hire. they get faster as the market becomes thin of candidates, but expect to lose candidates to other companies. I actually makes you look like your skills are in demand, and they should have snapped you up. good luck.

Simon, I agree with Franklin and Joseph. Call them back, talk to the person that interviewed you or who recruited you, briefly tell them about your decision, thank them for the opportunity, keep you in mind for future opportunities with their organization, and wish them the best. However, and this may be old school, but I would follow that up with a nice letter summarizing the above.

How do I get a application yes I'm interested please contact me at this number ASAP thanks again for your help God bless you

If you received the job offer by phone I would call them back. Whatever way they contacted you I would do the same

Simon, email is an in-personal way of cumminication, an easy out for people and definitly not something you want to do in this case. Show the man that did the interview, some respect & gratitude for the opportunity, but another option that may be in your best interest at this time has come along you want to persue.

Franklin has it correct. Return the call and explain the decision.

At least you have a possible offer. After ten years I was fired and every interview I get, and I get two at least for the same position, it's the same thing. I agree though, be positive and don't burn a bridge you may need.

Return the phone call and talk to the person you interviewed with or is recruiting you. Briefly tell them about your decision, be appreciative, and wish them the best.
