Yes, many if not most states have laws permitting companies to run credit checks on prospective employees. Credit history reveals many things: integrity, stability, whether or not you are a criminal or financial risk -- would you possibly steal money or customer information due to financial hardship. Overall, good credit demonstrates good discipline. A poor credi record doesn't mean disaster though: You may be able to overcome it by being upfront in explaining what brought on legitimate hardship.
