What are 3 factors that delay background checks?
I’m just trying to understand why it’s taking so long to get a background check confirmation from a recruiter. I thought these checks were conducted electronically and completed within 3 working days but maybe there are other factors that I’m not aware of.

Sometimes its the volume of work that the background check actually has at this time. There are brand new laws being mentioned on the news which would slow things down

inaccurate or incomplete information on the form

One reason Alvin, might be your recruiter is doing "mass production". He/She pays less if its done in a bundle. So they wait for other applicants information to come in then send them all in together.

Some reasons are:
- Company moved out of country
- The manager and/or contact information may have a different job with another company
- Accuracy of information
- Not reliable candidate
- Conflicting interests between candidate and its former employer such as unlawful termination of the job, patents, stock shares, etc.

I'm dealing with a very similar issue, I've never had any problems with verification of my background and I've worked in transportation and education even retail, now all of a sudden it's taking week for something come back which I am certain isn't even me. I was told that apparently someone with my same name has something (case) I suppose in FL and they're waiting on that. But the thing is it's certainly not me so nothing I can do but be patient, and wait for God's timing to release whatever so I can get to work.

I'm in the same boat. One of the county's involved in my background check is pending. The problem with county information is it is not always accessible electronically. Sometime the only way to get the records is to physically go to the county clerk and request it. You'd think in 2015, this would be possible.

There are a lot of reasons that verifications can be delayed. If the applicant doesn't provide full employer contact information, it can be difficult to locate the correct company, for instance. We had one employee that simply gave us "Smith Services, IL" for instance. Not much to go on there! You also have to realize that not all employers agree to electronic verifications and many require faxed requests. Sometimes we will get reply that they will respond within 30 days. Most only take 3-5 days (or less) but they can take longer.
New employees still learning the process, equipment malfunctions, and regular employees on vacation.
